Getting That Brass Ring

Lately, I’ve really been enjoying Dax Shepard’s Podcast, The Armchair Expert. I’ve listened to about three or four of them; and in particular, I want to talk about the episodes he did with therapist Phillip Stutz, Anna Kendrick, and Scott Galloway.

If you’ve followed my content at all, you know the EASA lens of the outside sources of self esteem:

E is for Esteem
A is for Achievement
S is for Society
A is for Attributes and Assets

In these episodes, they were saying something to the effect of, “I got that brass ring, and I still wasn’t happy.” What they meant was that they reached that achievement—be it making it in Hollywood, as a celebrity, or sports, sales, all kinds of things, and they still weren’t happy.

Why weren’t they happy? Because achievement is a source of self worth and self esteem that comes from outside ourselves. Self worth is inherent. It’s, “I have worth because I was born. I have enough and I matter.”

In the Scott Galloway episode, he mentioned that he feels like he needs to get positive feedback from other people. That would be Society based esteem; “I have worth because someone else says I do.”

These outside sources of self esteem might make you feel good in the moment, but they will ultimately ALWAYS leave you feeling unhappy and unfulfilled.

Do you feel like you need some help in this area? Let’s work together! I’ll help you identify which are your sources of outside self esteem and learn to reign yourself in when you encounter them and remind yourself: “I have worth because I was born.” Click here to get in touch.
